Ios is a mountainous island with the beauty of a dry landscape, as are most Cycladic islands, and is situated south of Naxos and Paros and north of Santorini. In the past, it served as the refuge of pirates. Today, Ios combines the intense cosmopolitan life with tradition. The fairy-like beaches, the white houses and the churches with blue domes are only part ot the things the visitor can discover on the island of the ancient Phoenixes. The capital of the island is Ios - Chora and it is one of the most safe natural harbours of Greece. The houses in Chora maintain their distinct character and have been characterized as preservable. Chora is built near the bay of Ios and its symbol is the small chruch of Ag. Irini which can be seen at the entrance of the harbour of Ormos. Ten minutes away from Chora we fall upon another bay, Mylopotas, which is famous for its sandy beach, considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean Sea.
